Stall Spotlight: Three Cats - Preserving Tradition and Creativity**

Meet Alex and Sarah, the creative duo behind "Three Cats," a beloved stall at our farmers market known for its unique and flavorful chutneys and preserves. The story of Three Cats began with a simple love for making preserves, a hobby that Sarah enjoyed sharing with friends and colleagues. For years, they gave away or swapped jars of homemade chutneys until a friend suggested they start selling their creations. After careful consideration and ensuring their kitchen met Council standards, Three Cats was born, named in honor of the three cats—Bruce, Maude, and Bella—that they brought back from the UK.

For the past 4-5 years, Alex and Sarah have been a staple at our market, delighting customers with their ever-evolving range of chutneys. Each jar is crafted in small batches, reflecting their commitment to quality and innovation. Their passion for experimenting in the kitchen is evident in the impressive 90+ recipes they’ve tried, with many trial jars still waiting in the garage.

Three Cats isn’t just limited to the farmers market; they also supply their chutneys to a local cheese outlet and a couple of vineyards. Despite their growing popularity, Alex and Sarah have been in no rush to expand their online presence, preferring to maintain a manageable pace. However, they’re working on a website that, when completed, may attract customers from beyond Marlborough.

Sarah balances her chutney-making with a part-time job at New Zealand King Salmon, while Alex, though retired, jokes that he’s busier now than ever, claiming he’s only allowed five minutes off every hour—though he admits that’s more wishful thinking. Outside of work, the couple enjoys building Lego and quilting, with Sarah often creating bags and quilt covers that never quite reach completion.

Next time you visit the market, be sure to stop by Three Cats for a taste of their latest creation. Each jar is a testament to their love for the craft and their dedication to bringing something special to our community.

SharpAs Tool Tips

Pictured is an old NZ army machete and an old cleaver. These were found in a very rusty condition and brought in for reconditioning — a very good find for the owner. If you have old tools don't be put off by rust, most times that can be removed leaving an excellent tool.

If you have any tools, knives, kitchen utensils etc that need reconditioning or sharpening come and see me at the Redwood Market Saturday mornings, at the Marlborough Farmers’ Market Sunday mornings or contact me direct on 027 444 5535,

Cheers Ron

"Our stallholders, Jennie and Bob from Windsong, are currently in Santa Barbara and shared some photos of the farmers market there. This market focuses entirely on fruit and vegetables, with about 50% of them organic—there isn’t even a coffee stall.

See you Sunday, 9 to noon, A&P showgrounds.
