La Ruca: Celebrating Latin American Flavors in Marlborough
La Ruca started in October 2012 at the Artisan Market in Marlborough. Initially named "WELCOME TO CHILE," we soon realized our passion for sharing a broader range of Latin American flavors, prompting a name change. What began as a hobby to bring the tastes of our home, Chile, and Latin America to the market, quickly grew in popularity, leading us to participate in festivals across Marlborough.
Background
We, Sebastian and Daniela, hail from Santiago, Chile. In 2008, we came to New Zealand on a working holiday visa to travel and improve our English, planning to stay for just a year. However, upon arriving, we fell in love with this part of the world and decided to make New Zealand our home. Both trained chefs, we initially worked in various restaurants during our working holiday visa period, eventually returning to the culinary world.
Our Growth Journey
We started modestly with a gazebo and a BBQ at the Artisan Market every Saturday. As our popularity grew, we expanded into local festivals, realizing we needed more than just a gazebo. This led us to purchase our first food truck. Two years ago, we took the plunge to make La Ruca our full-time job, adding a second food truck. Now, one truck serves festivals and catering events, while the other is stationed permanently at Boom Town during the summer season.
Balancing Work and Life
We embrace the busy summer season, knowing that winter will bring a more relaxed pace, allowing us time for ourselves. Sebastian enjoys maintaining our boat and sailing in the sounds, as well as outdoor activities like mountain biking, fishing, and trekking. Daniela loves reading, crocheting, swimming, and trekking. Together, we cherish traveling the world and learning about different cultures.
Thank you for supporting La Ruca. Visit us at the Marlborough Farmers Market to experience the vibrant flavors of Latin America!
"Never count your chickens until they hatch, or should we say - never count your olives until harvest is over."
We're deep into the olive harvest here at Flaxbourne, and it's proving to be a challenging season. Like many in the Marlborough region, we've faced high winds and severe frosts that have significantly impacted our yield. Just five weeks ago, we were expecting around 4 tons of olives, already down from the 6.2 tons in 2023 and 7.6 tons in 2022.
Despite these setbacks, we will have some Extra Virgin Olive Oil available in September, though in much smaller quantities than usual. We'll have a clearer picture of the final yield in just over a week.
In the meantime, a small amount of our olive oil is still available at the community stall. Thank you for your continued support this past season!

This eco-friendly packaging is not just a nod to our environmental values but also a piece of our team's story, reflecting our creative and resourceful spirit.
Each treat from Deeds and Bites is a little taste adventure, packed with flavors that celebrate our diverse cultural backgrounds. By sharing these delicious snacks, we aim to bring together different cultures in a safe and sustainable way, offering a flavorful glimpse into the rich culinary traditions of our homelands.

Love Thy Curry
Looking for a different spin on the classic Chicken Tikka Masala Curry…..
Take a Love Thy Curry Chicken Tikka curry kit but let’s make it vegetarian…
Swap out the chicken and instead use haloumi and veges.
Make the curry sauce to the recipe on the reverse of the packet, without the chicken.
Then pan fry some haloumi in a lightly oiled pan till golden brown.
Steam some veges of your choice (we used broccoli and cauliflower) but whatever you have is fine or roast some root vegetables in the oven.
Then add the haloumi and veges to the curry sauce and simmer gently for a couple of mins.
Serve with rice and naan….you will be going back for seconds it’s so delicious, believe me!
Sharp As Tool Tips
Electric knives are used in many kitchens for various food preparations. Pictured is a Minghettis' sourdough loaf from the Marlborough Farmers' Market being sliced with an electric knife. These, like all other cutting utensils, need sharpening to keep the cutting action smooth.
If you have one of these or any other tools, utensils, or knives that need sharpening, come and see me at the Redwood Market on Saturday morning or the Marlborough Farmers' Market on Sunday morning. Alternatively, you can contact me directly at 027 444 5535.
See you Sunday, 9 to noon, A&P showgrounds.
