Homemade Kiwi and SharpAs

Homemade Kiwi and SharpAs were created by Ron and Alyss,

Alys and Ron had been running a vineyard business for many years employing staff and all the associated work of running vineyards. When it came time to wind this business up They were left thinking of what's next. Amongst our skill sets were Alys's love of cooking and gardening ,and Ron's original trade of engineering.

After some trials  Alys interests evolved into dehydrated food, fruits ,soups and energy bars. Great for campers ,trampers and anyone looking for some different flavours to play with.

Ron decided to concentrate his skills into sharpening and repairing knives ,evolving as requests came in, to a highly diversified repairing and sharpening service.

Alyss has also created several cook books below is a excerpt from an Introduction

"My Mother in law, although a very 'dour' Dutch lady, referred to by her kin as 'The Dragon', was an incredible cook. She took pity on me (or probably her son) and shared some of her life long cooking secrets.  From her I learnt the art of Indonesian cooking."

After Alys's husband died she took a housekeeping position on a farm as the best way she could think of working and looking after her children (5 and 3)  at the same time. The country women helped her become proficient in cooking and baking fabulous meals, doing the household chores, paying all the bills, keeping the books, and working on the farm.

Alys progressed to Sous Chef at an upmarket Marlborough Hotel, then going out on her own catering.

Meeting Ron, and running the vineyards, Alys now, at age 88, does Homemade Kiwi at the market.

For relaxation Alys gets a lot of satisfaction in her flower garden .

For Ron, for relaxation, he likes motorbike riding. Some of the best parts of NZ is in the backcountry . Ron has an adventure bike, so he can enjoy those remote places.

For holidays we like small town NZ like Reefton .Good for recharging your batteries.

cheers Ays /Ron

Golden Mile

Golden Mile is bursting at the seams with loads of fresh & delicious fruit and vegetables at the moment. Harvesting is in full swing as the weather settles and crops mature. Everything from big green crunchy capsicums, sweet nutty kamokamo, versatile & easy zuchinni (both green & gold), cucumbers of varying colours, shapes and sizes (loving the snack pack ones, perfect for lunchboxes), all the alliums, simply stunning strawberries that are still picking so sweet and juicy. Lots of greens and then throw some heat in the mix with all the chilies. Green Cloud, Jalapenos, green ones short & long all with varying degrees of heat, Rocoto's (the only chili with a black seed!) Make sure you try Boom's new Rocoto hot sauce as this is where the fruit has come from! For all you picklers & preservers out there, there is gherkins galore! Throw some purple in the mix with exceptional eggplants, round ones, long ones all tasty & terrific. Nearly missed the melons...watermelons are fairly large this week as we are heading towards the end of the block and sadly rock melons might be scarce until the following week, but in the words of Arnie "we'll be back".

Can't wait to see you, call and check out what fruit or vegetable shirt I'll be 'rockin' this week! Stephen

Community Stall

Rotary and Selmes Garden Centre have booked the Community Stall for Sunday 24th March.

Selmes Garden Centre are focused on helping the disabled community with meaningful Nursery and Garden work. They employ 10 people with a further 10 volunteers undertaking a wide range of nursery duties and receiving a lot of training to help them contribute to their community as we, fortunate enough to be able bodied, do. AND They pay a standard wage.

Last December, several of you may recall, young people going around a number of properties in Batty’s Road recklessly damaging vehicles including the Selmes work truck. For Selmes, this was devastating. Insurance did not go anywhere near replacing their written off vehicle.

The Garden Centre is run by a Trust who require funding support to be able to do what they do, and do not have resources to cover senseless acts of destruction. Rotary have stepped up with a short fundraising campaign to raise $10000+ to get them a new work vehicle. They are very appreciative for the opportunity to come to the Market where Selmes will be present with a range of plants and seedlings, Rotary have two trailer loads of firewood for sale and will have Dinner Tickets  16th April, Raffles and an ability to donate.

We thank you for the opportunity.
