One market into Level 2, there’s no better way to enjoy our winter market than in the glorious August sun in the open.
This Sunday promises light winds, mostly cloud during our market and occasional rain from afternoon. Let’s hope it stays that way or improves. We will have 31 stalls on site for you, including new season asparagus. Yum.
Perfect to get your groceries in the morning and then perhaps hunker down with your goodies for one of the last winter Sundays this season.
Here’s a reminder of our changes at Level 2
- We’re back outdoors. The weather forecast at this point is for a cloudy morning with rain in the afternoon. Let’s hope it stays that way or improves.
- Stalls will be two meters apart and there is hand sanitiser at each stall.
- We will have one entrance way to the Market Arena adjacent the Maxwell Road park entrance.
- We will contract trace, recording the name, email and mobile phone of each customer / group.
- Vehicle traffic flow will be one way: Enter via Alabama Road and Exit via Maxwell Road out past the toilet and administration block
- We will have tables out, but will limit use to one party per table.
In case the situation changes, we will use the newsletter once again to let you know how you can support local producers and get the goods you need.

Honey and Heyfever
Did you know some people swear that honey helps keep their hay fever at bay. We spoke with a regular Farmers’ Market customer who has been using raw Honey to significantly reduce hey fever medication over time. He says a teaspoon of raw honey each day, was the secret, any raw honey, as long as it’s raw.

Isobel Olives is still offering a special on the last of the 2018 oil – buy 2 x 500ml bottles for $40 or 2 x 250ml bottles for $30.00 available in delicate medium and robust. This offer won’t last much longer.
If you want oil for dipping and tasting, the 2020 oil is intense and rich in health giving polyphenols. We suggest you try the single variety Koroneiki (Greek olive) with breads, the delicate blend for baking and the medium blend for everyday use for marinades and roasting veggies. Come and choose yours this Sunday.
College student entrepreneurs
The Scrumdiddly-Tum Marlborough Girls College student team participating in the Young Enterprise Scheme had a great time at the market last week selling their 40g dark rich Belgian superfood chocolate bars.
Marlborough Girls College Year 13 Business group students making a spray called ‘Keep N Fresh’ hope to be at the market this Sunday. The spray from natural ingredients acts as a preservative to prevent fruit and vegetables from going brown prematurely.
Snail House Bakery
This week at the stall will be apple strudel made by my very capable Austrian husband. And of course the usual favourites like German style rye sourdough bread and the more French style sourdough country loaf, wheat free adventure bread, superseeded multigrain, Cinnamon snails, sour cherry pie, the world famous Chocolate Sacher Torte and Linzer Torte, an extra Portion of chia seed crackers, breadsticks and coconut pani popos can’t ever be taken of the menu again either.

Last week I talked about the many uses of Orange Peel Powder. Here’s a recipe you might like to try.
TANGY ORANGE SAUCE
Combine 1/2 teaspoon of salt with 1 cup of brown sugar and 2 tablespoons of corn starch. Stir in 2 teaspoons of Orange Peel Powder, 2 cups of orange juice and 1 cup of water, Cook over low heat for about 10 minutes until thick. Great over Poultry, meat or vegetarian dishes.
The very best way to start your day is with 1 teaspoon of Orange Peel powder sprinkled over your Breakfast Yoghurt.

SharpAs Tool Tips
Spring is now fast approaching. The warmer weather not only gets nature moving in the garden but also we get more motivated to enjoy the good weather and activities, whether it be in the garden, kitchen, work shed, restaurant, workplace, sporting activities.
If it has an edge to sharpen, bring it along to the Farmers Market to get sharpened. Arrangements can be made for pickup where required. The photo shows a sample of some of the tools that you may want sharpened.
Recipe of the week
“This is one of my go-to desserts at the moment, “ says Sigrun from Natural Microgreens. I sneak it in at morning tea, for a snack in the afternoon, or after dinner.
It’s easy to prepare, no added sugar free and wholesome.
8 med size apples, (I prefer Sturmer or Braeburn)
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Hazelnut Crumble Mix (I used about a ¼ of a cup)
a knob of ghee (lactose free) or butter
¼ cup of water
honey and gelato or vanilla custard to serve
Preheat the oven to 180°C. De-core and cut the unpeeled apples into 8ths. Transfer to a lidded baking dish (I used my roasting dish). Sprinkle hazelnut crumble to give it a good dusting, and cinnamon on top. Add a knob of ghee or butter and the water to the dish. Bake for 45 mins.
Serve warm or cold with vanilla custard or ice cream.
How to recognise the Sturmer apple: It has blushed, green/bronze skin with an acidic, aromatic, sweet and juicy flesh that is very firm. This variety is great cooked. The fruit is very high in Vitamin C.
